    A GLIMPSE IN HISTORY

There are four (4) versions as to how Mangaldan got its name. The first version relates that one day a Spanish missionary inquired from one inhabitant about the name of the place in the Spanish language. Thinking that the missionary was asking for water, the inhabitant replied “MANGA-ALAY-ADAN”, which means “Adan is fetching”.

The second version states that Mangaldan got its name from the first native chief of the town named “BABALDAN”. The third version says that just at the middle of the plaza was a big mango tree laden with fruits. It was customary that anyone of the town’s inhabitants was free to gather the fruits but it resulted in quarreling among themselves. The meaning of the quarrel in the dialect is ‘MAN-NGA-NGAL-NGALAN”. Of these versions, anyone of them seems to justify the legendary origin of the name and therefore, “MANGA-ALAY-ADAN”, “BABALDAN” and “MAN-NGA-NGAL-NGALAN” when stated in plain word gave rise to “MANGALDAN”.

The fourth version of how Mangaldan got its name is attributed to Fr. Raymundo Suarez, OP. In his more than a century year old manuscript “ApuntesCureosos de Pangasinan”, it was stated that “MANGALDAN” was derived from the root word “ALAR” or “ALAD” which is interposed between the particles “MANG” and “AN”. In the Pangasinan dialect, “ALAR” or ‘ALAD” signifies a fence made of bamboo or of any similar material. However, the word is syncopated by suppressing the penultimate “A” and what remains alone is “MANGALDAN”.

Mangaldan existed as a ranch in its beginning and the presence of bamboo fences in the place would have given rise to the town’s appellation which accordingly justifies Fr. Suarez’s version. (The preceding etymology of the name of Mangaldan was taken from Rev. Fr. Rafael Magno’s Historical Retrospect on the Town of Mangaldan, Pangasinan, 1600-1898).

Mangaldan is a municipality in the province of Pangasinan. . It is located around 200 kilometers north of Manila, the country's main city.  Mangaldan is well-known for its colorful culture, rich history, and agricultural legacy.

The municipality has a land area of around 4, 847 acres and an increasing population of inhabitants. It is distinguished by its flat topography due to its location in Pangasinan's middle plains.

Agriculture is very important in Mangaldan's local economy. The municipality's lush plains facilitate the growth of rice, corn, vegetables, and numerous fruit crops. Many locals farm, and the town's agricultural produce adds to the economy.

The climate of Mangaldan is warm and tropical, with distinct rainy and dry seasons. The municipality receives a lot of rain during the wet season, which lasts from June to October, and less rain during the dry season, which lasts from November to May.

The town is famed for its annual Pindang Festival, a colorful event celebrated in honor of Mangaldan's famous culinary specialty known as "pindang." Pindang refers to the local form of dried and seasoned carabao meat or bangus (milkfish). The event celebrates the town's gastronomic tradition and includes street dance, food exhibitions, and cultural presentations.

Mangaldan's infrastructure has grown throughout time, with upgraded road networks, public facilities, and basic services. There are educational institutions, health centers, markets, and business establishments in the township.

Mangaldan also holds historical significance, as it was one of the first settlements established by Spanish colonizers in the region. The town has several historical landmarks, including the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Church, which was built during the Spanish colonial era and is considered a cultural heritage site.

Overall, Mangaldan offers a mix of rural charm and urban development. It showcases the agricultural abundance of the region, preserves its cultural heritage, and provides a comfortable living environment for its residents (ed23)
