Mangaldan, the third oldest town in Pangasinan, was designated as a Spanish encomienda in 1591 and later became a vicariate by the Dominicans in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas on June 2, 1600. Originally a part of Calasiao, it now belongs to the fourth congressional district, situated 23 kilometers from the provincial capital, Lingayen. The town covers 4,847 hectares and had a population of 113,185 as per the 2020 census.
The name "Mangaldan" has three proposed origins. One story tells of a Spanish missionary inquiring about the settlement's name, but a local, misunderstanding, replied “manga-alay-adan” meaning “Adan is fetching water.” Another version credits the name to its first native chief, "Babaldan." The third account relates to a large mango tree in the town center, where locals, initially sharing its abundant fruits, eventually quarreled over the dwindling supply, described in the phrase “man-nga-ngal-ngalan”.
Mangaldan is renowned for producing the finest 'pindang' or tapa, which is dried and cured carabao meat. The pindang festival, started in 2012 during the town fiesta, celebrates the local meat vendors and highlights the meat industry as a vital part of the local economy. Additionally, the town is famous for its peanut brittle, a product innovated by Romana de Vera in 1958. The brand has since expanded its range to include peanut 'adobo' brittle, greaseless peanuts, ube halaya, pastillas, among others, growing into a well-known name over the years.
